Here at Daystar Retirement Community, we understand the importance of living a full life, and that's why we focus on all aspects of healthy living. There are all sorts of activities to enjoy as well as a wide variety of fitness programs to keep you in your best shape.
Our dining room offers a full selection of menu offerings at every meal, and because we have a dietitian on-site you can be sure they'll work with your primary care provider if you have any special dietary requirements.
Enriching Lives, Building Community.
Every decision we make must satisfy two basic requirements. One, it must enrich lives and two, it must build community. This is our mission. We also adhere to five core values, which are to
1. Be Dedicated
2. Be Optimistic
3. Be Trustworthy
4. Embrace Change
5. Seek to Understand
Every team member is reminded of these core values by the coin they receive to carry with them each day.
Daystar Executive Director
Eva Thomas began working at Daystar as a housekeeper in 1993. She has been with the company for 25 ½ years and has held many jobs here, working her way up to become our Executive Director.
Eva really enjoys working for Powell Communities. She feels that it is truly a family-oriented organization. Everyone is a joy to work with, and the company really makes it easy to come to work every day- they sincerely work with you to achieve your dreams.
She strives every day to not only connect with the seniors in our community, but also to make them happy, and to forge positive, caring relationships with them and their families.
When not at work, Eva loves to spend time with her 8-year-old grandson, as well as on her photography hobby.

Director of Dining Services
I am Ma Glori Anne Escalante and I have been working in the kitchen for about eight years now. Kitchen work is both full of fun and challenges. Fun because I am innately a kitchen person and challenging because it requires a lot of patience and determination. Experience-wise, I started as a server, and I work my way up to achieve my dream job of becoming a chef with my hard work and diligence.
I sure have learned a lot from my work experience and now, I can do pretty much every kitchen work-dishwashing, cooking, expediting-anything. Daystar Retirement Village is my second home now. I’ve been here five months, but I felt my heart belonged here. I love working here because the residents and staff are amazing. I will always be grateful for what I have right now because I found a TEAM and a FAMILY.
Daystar Senior Sales Director
Jason Kitchel began working for Powell Communities in May of 2018. He joins us here at Powell with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington State University, and over 25 years of sales and customer service experience including more than 14 years of experience working in Skilled nursing, senior living, and retirement communities.
Jason really enjoys the culture at Powell. We are a family-owned business, and everyone truly is treated like family- with integrity and passion, and always keeping in mind The Golden Rule.
There can often be a lot of anxiety surrounding the decision to move family members into a senior community, and Jason strives to put people’s minds at ease as much as possible by listening to them and showing them that this is not the end of the story- it is simply a new chapter and everyone at Powell Communities is here to help continue the story with them, and that we are not an “old folks home” – we truly ARE a community.
When not working, Jason likes to spend time fishing, playing with his two dogs, and working in his yard. He is also a huge sports fan – “Go Cougs!”
Daystar Community Relations Director
Katie Krause has been with Daystar since 2015. Katie’s first jobs were in retirement communities, which led her to the University of Washington where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Art, as well as a certificate in gerontology.
Katie really enjoys getting to know the residents in our community, helping them find the positives, feeling connected, and making sure they are comfortable. She loves engaging everyone, listening to them, and hearing their stories.
In her downtime, Katie likes finding new restaurants, paddling boarding with her Golden Retriever Penny, and camping with her husband.
“Life is like a camera, focus on the important, capture the good, develop from the negative and if things don’t work out, take another shot.”
The Powell family takes pride in creating Daystar a place where so many people call home today.
Built out of the Huntington Park community's expressed need for an assisted living facility in the 1980s (before assisted living facilities were even an option) Monte Powell and his family worked strategically to build Daystar and provide senior care. Now, 40 years later, Daystar Retirement Village offers Independent & Assisted Living to seniors in West Seattle.
You'll be surrounded by personal touches, from the year-round splendor of gardens created by avid gardener Monte Powell to home interiors touched by the talented hands and heart of his wife Diane. A family dedicated to always offering the best of life's comforts, safety, and convenience is the foundation of their success. They have invested love and personal care in the apartment homes they've created and in those who live and love it here.
A caring and devoted staff is always on duty, fulfilling the Powell promise of making Daystar a place you'll be proud to make your home.
